Jenolan Caves has reopened the Nettle Cave after 74 years, introducing a fascinating digital audio tour that allows you to explore on a self-guided basis. Together with the adjoining Devil's Coach House, the Nettle Cave has been incorporated into a trail that you can explore at your own pace, using a digital handset developed by Acoustiguide. The Nettle Cave features formations like stalactites and stalagmites, and is also one of just a few sites in the world where stromatolites - or craybacks - grow. These enormous craybacks are formations that contain colonies of live bacteria, interacting with the crystal and enabling the formations to continue to grow in their strange lobster shape. There is some evidence that the craybacks at Jenolan may be between 20,000 and 100,000 years old. Bookings phone 1300 763311or visit www.jenolancaves.org.au, |
