Spring Heralds a Mountain Renewal
The hyacinths are the early heralds. Poking up through damp mulch, peeping out from tiny gaps in rockery stone, proudly announcing that while winter does its worst all is well. Spring is running on time and planning its gala recital. Are those the opening notes of a Spring Concerto floating in the clear morning air?
Next come the glorious pinks of the Mountains’ flowering cherries blending with the greens and golds of Australia’s own wattles, with so many varieties of both on show. Daffodils, snowdrops, crocuses, jonquils, freesias - clustering beneath trees and splashing across lawns, a free advertisement for the floral festivals and open gardens of a Blue Mountains Spring.
Magpies and cockatoos squabble in mid-air disputes over unseen territories while the small birds hop around between bushes, sensibly going about their business as always. Tiny wrens and finches chirp from cover to cover, offering the visitor charming glimpses into the world of small birds, increasingly rare in coastal locations. On the wing, an ungainly satin bower bird plucks what it believes to be a tasty berry from a freshly budding bush, no doubt rehearsing its complimentary performances of avian eccentricity.
There’s a whole world inside every dewdrop; and on mountain ranges around the world, Spring is the colour of rebirth. Nowhere is it seen to better advantage than here, in Australia’s Blue Mountains.
